- SC ends impunity for armed forces in disturbed areas
- Till now, security personnel enjoyed immunity under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 (AFSPA) against criminal action for acts committed in disturbed areas.
- In disturbed areas army could kill on basis of internal information etc. no need for justification.
- But yesterday, Supreme Court said “Every death caused by the armed forces in a disturbed area, whether the victim is a dreaded criminal or a militant or a terrorist or an insurgent, should be thoroughly enquired into”.
- Importance: Civil (Article 21) & Human Rights get acknowledged in sensitive areas under military control.
- AFSPA applied states:
- North-East: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya.
- Jammu & Kashmir: (J& K AFSPA act)
- Fat Tax
- Kerala applied ‘fat tax’ on food articles of conspicuous consumption (high end restaurant food) such as pizzas and burghers sold through branded restaurants.
- Tax: 14.5%
