  • Rajya Sabha passes Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2012
    • Bill seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.
    • Added a new category of persons called “adolescent” – between 14 and 18 years of age.
    • Prohibition of employment of adolescents in hazardous occupations as specified (mines, hazardous processes and inflammable substance).
    • Complete ban against employment of children before 14 years in any occupation, except where child helps his/her family.
    • Increased fine on employing children or employing adolescent in hazardous occupation from 20,000 to 50,000 along with, provision for Jail term of upto 2 years.

  • Noted Indian hockey player Mohammed Shahid passed away due to multiple organ failure in Gurugram, Haryana.
  • As per data shared by Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha in the Lok Sabha today, there were 34.26 Crore Internet subscribers as on March 31, 2016. In the list of 138 internet service providers shared by the minister, telecom major Bharti Airtel topped the chart with 90.53 million internet subscribers.
  • The Election Commission has rejected a petition filed by A.P.J. Mohamed Muthu Meera Maraikayar, elder brother of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, objecting to the registration of the Abdul Kalam Vision India Party (AKVIP) as a political party under the Representation of People Act, 1951.
    • The AKVIP was launched by Ponraj, former scientific adviser and close aide of Kalam, at Rameswaram on February 29.
    • What did election commission say: “National leaders cannot be said to be the exclusive right or property of any particular party or organisation and those who believe in the philosophy and ideology of such leaders cannot be prevented from propagating the same by using the name.”
  • Aimed at giving an impetus to the use of Hindi, Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti has directed divisions in her Ministry to prepare agenda notes of important meetings first in Hindi and then translate it into English. Ms. Bharti has also asked officers to make a beginning by making file notings in Hindi.
