  • Climate change: has turned the Arctic snow pink. It is called as Rose snow and is not so uncommon in high altitudes and occurs when the green algae turns pink after absorbing too much ultraviolet rays.
  • Assam First state in India to offer free higher education to students whose parents earn less than 1lac/year
  • India’s first Centre of Excellence on Internet of Things (CoE– IoT) was launched in Bengaluru, Karnataka by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM).
  • Tribunal rejects Beijing’s claims on South China Sea
  • The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands concluded that China has no legal basis for its vast claims in the South China Sea.
  • The decision was on complaint filed by Philippines against China, but in actuality 6 governments have overlapping territorial claims in South China sea.
    • China, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, & Taiwan.
    • Note: Permanent Court of Arbitration is different from International Court of Justice, also at Hague.
    • ICJ is Principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN).
    • It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946.

  • Indian Navy has commissioned INS Karna, an independent base of Marine Commandos (MARCOS) at Bheemunipatanam Naval Base, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
    • Marine Commando Force (MCF), is the special forces unit of the Indian Navy.
    • Operation Rakshak: Marcos deployed in Jhelum & Wular lake in J&K (1995)
  • The first direct bus service between Pokhara (Nepal) and New Delhi (India) has been was launched.
    • Before Pokhara, Kathmandu & Mahendranagar in Nepal have been connected with Bus service from India.
  • Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a nationwide Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) to check child diarrhoeal deaths
    • Oral Rehydration Salt(ORS) & Zinc Therapy shall be given
      Diarrhoea
      Diarrhoea can be caused by various virus, bacteria and protozoa like rotavirus, E.coli etc.
    • Contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, malnutrition and lack of immunization cane be few reasons.
    • The combination of ORS and Zinc is the most cost-effective intervention to prevent deaths due to diarrhoea.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT Bombay to promote innovation by start-ups in the financial sector.
    • SINE is IIT Bombay’s technology business incubator to promote innovation by startups in the financial sector.

  • World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on 14th June as it is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the creator of the ABO blood group system, for which he won the Nobel Prize. The first day was held in 2005.
